119. Nightfall beckons

Let not the night mourn in despair

As darkness snuffs out the flame

Of yellow ochre stains that streak

Quite noiselessly

Across turquoise painted skies.

Let not the silence hold her breath

As wispy clouds circle a silver moon.

Howling dogs call out our names

Quite faithfully

And so our wild hearts sigh.

Let not the inky blackness swallow me whole

For the night is dark, darker than it was yesterday.

The stars are hidden, far away from all light.

I strain my eyes to make out my path.

116. All roads lead to home

The winds blew and we were caught in a storm,

Waves crashed furiously from nightfall into dawn,

We listened to each other speak and thought in our heads

But confusion reigned noisily and our hearts filled with dread.

The road wasn’t paved yet,

The ground was all wet,

The leaves blew into our eyes

Stealing our precious sight.

We soldiered on,

Two by two,

All alone.

Carrying bricks with hands so worn,

One by one,

All alone.

Our duty we did,

Our way back we knew,

When we finally turned back

To look at the city and you.

114. Blanket for dreaming

Weave me a blanket,
Heavy and thick,
And lay it over me as I sleep;
Let it protect my dreams from the burden of loss.

A bell tolls far away in the darkened distance.

I keep my eyes shut,
And refuse to surrender to the shattering of hope.

Somewhere, someone’s heart is breaking.

109. Holes

There’s a hole in my chest where my heart ought to be
There’s a hole in my head where my mind ought to be
There’s a hole in my body where my womb ought to be
Where’s my soul?
Where’s my soul?

There’s a silence in this world where sound ought to be
There’s a violence in this world where peace ought to be
There’s a grievance in this world where love ought to be
Where’s your soul?
Where’s your soul?

There’s nobody beside me where you ought to be
There’s just darkness around me where light ought to be
Let my life have hope as it ought to be
Make my soul
Once more whole

106. The future is here

When does the future occur,
Tell me when?

When does this present moment
Come to its end?

When does time
Stop and stand?

When will we walk
Hand in hand?

104. Life is short

Life is short.

How often do we hear this?
Sometimes death etches a scar so terribly deep that no amount of rain can wash it away.

Life is short.

Love, just love.
Love others.
Love yourself.
We come into this world alone and we leave it alone, but we are not alone while we are alive.

Please be kind to one another and to yourself.

Remember, life is short.

95. Speak

Do what you should,
Not what you can.

Don’t break lives.
Heal with your hands.
Speak up till you’re sore,
Defend every child, woman and man.

Do what you should,
And not what you can.

(Dedicated with love to my friend, Sharon Anderson – for courage, compassion and doing the right thing.)

93. Take courage

Know who you lend your voice to,
For you only make theirs louder;
Know who you shut your heart to,
For you only make life bleaker.

Be not the yes-man,
The one with neither guts nor clear sight;
Please, if you see someone wronged,
Speak up and make things right.

These waters are no longer still
For the first rock has been thrown,
The ripples are moving far
Beyond where the winds have blown.

Don’t you have a conscience?
Haven’t you felt such pain?
Look at what you stand for,
What do you hope to gain?

Know who you lend your voice to,
For you only make theirs louder;
Know who you shut your door to,
For you only make others suffer.
