62. Empty table for 6

For what defines a family if the family bleeds with cracks unseen?
By those who know not the deeper sense of belonging,
Oh what does it mean?

What does it mean to belong to no one
even though we are more than one?
What will it take for you to see what you’ve done to me?

46. Empty mind

The open mind isn’t an empty mind,
The quiet mind isn’t the silenced mind,
The falling rain isn’t the tearing of the sky,
My own mind is what I’m trying to find.

The rain keeps falling outside,
Heavy raindrops hit down hard on the ground.
The trees cast shadows down the hallowed path,
Opening a new way to view the world.

Perhaps this is a journey I must walk alone,
Nobody will know where my path leads.
This new mind I seek will be mine alone,
Free from the past and you.

34. Unworn

You’re gone.
You’re not coming back.
Your shoes lie empty on the doorstep,
Unworn from now on.

The rain fell that night.
I didn’t sleep because I waited up for you.
Nobody told me you had left.

I sat at the table the next morning,
Stirring my coffee till it got cold.
The ground was still wet.
I waited some more.
I waited till I could wait no longer.

My feet pressed into the soft mud, leaving footprints that I hoped you’d fill.

I walked till I could walk no further.
Betrayal is but another word for the absence of life.

33. Betrayal

Betrayal comes from the empty chair,
Betrayal comes from the broken cup,
Betrayal comes from the thunderstorm stirring trouble in a wounded heart.

Betrayal comes from silence,
Betrayal comes from you,
Betrayal comes from all the things you did and did not do.
