120. Brother

It was a quiet night
The day I found out
My brother had died.

Not a leaf flew
Even though the breeze blew,
Perhaps the trees knew.

I sat on the steps,
Cold brick was the shoulder
I leaned on.
I looked at the sky
Darkening behind them
As they worked on.
I thought and I prayed
That he would be safe
And life would simply go on.
But it happened too quickly
And I didn’t need to hear their words
To know he was long gone.

Their eyes said it all,
I screamed and I cried
And his name I did call.

My brother, my brother,
Was no more, he was gone,
He was gone forever.
